Statement

The subtractive process dominates my work; I use perforation and cutting to explore concepts that focus on intangibles, things that are missing, gone, left out or, perhaps, were never really there. My drawings range in scale and materials from gouache on photo snapshots to wall size installations of cut paper, to metal grommets pounded through plastic tarps. Shadows and holes figure into most of my work, often functioning as both the subject and the object of a piece. I am excited by the drawing tradition of using "negative space" to define an image. Much of my current work feature holes - drawn, cut or punctured - as their focal point.

The void is a potent space; it alludes to both lack and potential - something taken away and something to fill. What fill my drawings are storms, turbulence, wounds, ghosts and guts. States of extreme change and mortality are starting points in my work. I use delicacy, humor and sensuality to handle topics that I am overwhelmed and intrigued by.
